A Japanese company originally devoted to building railcars and developing electric generators, Tohatsu entered the marine engine business in 1956. By the 1980s, Tohatsu Outboards was selling their two-stroke gasoline motors in several international markets including the United States. Adjusting to the increasingly more stringent emission rules with the adaptation of four-stroke combustion and direct fuel injection in 2001, Tohatsu is recognized for building outboard motors accommodating a wide range of boating applications. Tohatsu outboard motors can be found in performance varieties from 2.5 to 115 horsepower.
