Founded by a Norwegian immigrant, Johnson Boat Works began production of sailing vessels in 1898. Manufacturing small sailboats in the state of Minnesota, Johnson Boat Works supplied racing-oriented watercraft for multiple competitive organizations including the X Boat. Melges Boat Works purchased the molds of Johnson Boat Works products in 1998 when the company reached the centennial mark.
