Since the foundation of the Jaguar luxury marque, there have been a number of high-quality sedans (identified as saloons in the United Kingdom). In 1968, Jaguar introduced the XJ sedan series. The XJ6 (originally signifying the use of a six-cylinder engine) and later a twelve-cylinder powered XJ12. The XJ12 was eventually discontinued while the XJ series gained eight-cylinder engine power in the late 1990s.
