With a new Porsche 911 on the horizon in 1999, the 1998 version of the fabled sports car spends its final year based on 993 architecture. The 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4 models remain for the 1998 model year but turbocharged engines are not available. 1998 is the final year where the Porsche 911 will be propelled by air-cooled powerplants with the next model adopting liquid-cooling. Following a well-received launch for the smaller Porsche Boxster in 1997, the companion to the 911 continues to serve as a fun roadster with a mid-mounted engine generating 201 horsepower. Side impact, door-mounted airbags come standard on the Boxster for 1998.
