The Saab lineup is completely reinvented for the 1999 model year. Retaining two vehicles for 1999, Saab has renamed the 900 as the 9-3 and the 9000 as the 9-5. The new 9-3 and 9-5 both receive freshened exterior appearances as well as improved engineering. Powered exclusively by turbocharged engines for 1999, the Saab 9-3 returns as a three-door coupe, five-door sedan and convertible body style. Providing a new performance benchmark for the Saab 9-3, the Viggen model features a 225-horsepower, turbocharged 2.3-liter engine exclusively mated with a five-speed manual transmission. Slightly longer than the 9000 it replaces, the 1999 Saab 9-5's new persona arrives as a sedan or a wagon. Anti-whiplash front head rests, side airbags and anti-lock braking system is standard on all 1999 Saab models.
