For 1999, two of Volkswagen's most prominent vehicles receive a complete redesign. The Golf hatchback and 1999 Jetta sedan both embody a more rounded shape. An all-new, performance-rated Volkswagen GTI offered with a four-cylinder or 172-horsepower VR6 engine is also part of the 1999 redesign. Versions of these three vehicles based on the previous generation design are also being sold as 1999 models. While the Golf gains a new platform, the drop top Cabrio continue to be based on the previous platform. The 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio does feature revised outer styling and a new dashboard. The Volkswagen EuroVan minivan returns to the United States for the first time since 1993. A seven-passenger small van, the EuroVan is powered by a 2.8-liter VR6 engine. Introduced last year, the highly-publicized New Beetle arrives in 1999 with a host of new content. Anti-lock braking system is now standard on the Volkswagen New Beetle and a performance-oriented GLX model with a 150-horsepower turbocharged engine is now part of the line-up.
