Mazda enters into a new vehicle category for 2001. The Mazda Tribute is a four-door compact sport utility vehicle developed in cooperation with Ford. In addition to minor styling differences, a slightly firmer suspension ride distinguishes the Mazda Tribute from Ford's Escape. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the 2001 Tribute are available as is an optional V-6 engine. For 2001, a new top-performing engine is offered on the Mazda B-Series compact truck. A single overhead cam version of the 4.0-liter V-6 engine now produces 207 horsepower for B4000 models. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard equipped with the new engine. Buyers of the Mazda MPV in LX and ES trim levels can now upgrade their minivan with an optional sport appearance package. Receiving a minor styling enhancement for 2001, the Millenia also boasts a deepened array of premium accessories.
