Kia joins the minivan vehicle segment in 2002 with the Sedona. Introduced for the United States market, the 2002 Kia Sedona is a seven-passenger family hauler powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Kia's recently added subcompact, the Rio, is expanded for 2002 with a new wagon body style. Called the Rio Cinco, the subcompact wagon provides a highly versatile vehicle with a very low price. Standard wheels of the Kia Rio and Optima sedan have been upgraded. The 2002 Rio's wheels grow from 13-inch to 14-inch in diameter while the Optima is now coasting on 15-inch wheels. The size and output of the Kia Optima's optional V-6 engine are also improved for the mid-sized sedan. A 2.7-liter V-6 in the 2002 Optima is rated at 178 horsepower. The Sephia name has been dropped by Kia for 2002 as the Spectra name is now applied to both the brand's compact sedan and hatchback.
