Mazda introduces a new naming strategy to their mid-sized family sedan for 2003. The Mazda 626 becomes simply known as the Mazda6 for 2003. Wider and taller than its predecessor, the 2003 Mazda6 sedan is offered with a four-cylinder or a V-6 engine choice. Four-wheel disc brakes, stereo system with CD player and a tilt/telescoping steering column is standard on all Mazda6 models for 2003. A new Mazdaspeed version of the Protege features special sports tailoring and a 170-horsepower turbocharged engine. Base wheels for the 2003 Mazda MX-5 Miata have been upgraded to 16 inches in diameter. A limited run of 1,500 Mazda MX-5 Miata Shinsen models is available in 2003 in Titanium Gray Metallic paint and dark blue seats and soft top. A budget-friendly LX-SV model of the 2003 Mazda MPV is provided alongside the LX and ES.
