Mercury's enters 2005 with the introduction of two all-new nameplates attached to pivotal debuts. The Montego is larger than the Sable and possesses several new features. A uniquely-configured interior is designed to provide the driver a more upright driving feeling than experienced with most sedans. All-wheel drive is also optional on the new full-sized sedan. A six-speed automatic or a continuously variable transmission can be paired with the 2005 Montego's 203-horsepower V-6 engine. Coming five years after the Ford Escape compact sport utility's debut, Mercury finally receives their version of the vehicle in the form of the Mariner. Detailed with unique styling cues, the 2005 Mercury Mariner can be equipped with four-cylinder or six-cylinder power. The LSE trim level returns to the Grand Marquis for the 2005 model year featuring a standard Handling & Performance Package as well as a bucket seat option. After two years of availability, the Mercury Marauder sport sedan is no more.
