2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe
NADAguides Test Drive Review
Introduced in 2002, the Cadillac CTS (Catera Touring Sedan) has been a wildly successful competitor in the mid-size luxury car segment. Cadillac has now supplemented the original CTS with performance oriented variants (CTS-V) and most recently, has added a coupe trim level. For the 2012 CTS Coupe, Cadillac has introduced a modified front grille, updated logo, new technology, new option packages, and a lighter engine.

The Touring Package provides the CTS with evocative and unique styling. A sport finish grille, in addition to polished 19-inch wheels, makes for an aggressively edgy exterior. The exterior finish of the vehicle is very much on par for the luxury segment. Panels are made from quality materials and the angular design gives the CTS an appealing look. Exterior color options include reds, greens, blues, and silvers.

Under the hood, drivers will find a direct injected 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 318 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. Adjustments are comprised of larger valves, altered ports, and a revised camshaft. A manual transmission is no longer offered but the Hydra-Matic 6L50 6-speed automatic transmission with driver shift controls enables smooth, unnoticeable, shifts. A safe feeling is evoked by the CTS’ ability to avoid noticeable sway and handle corners responsively at high speeds. That being said, off-the-line acceleration is not as quick as expected and the ride can be harsh when equipped with the sport suspension. Weight loss makes a significant difference, giving the CTS an athletic feel and impressive braking.

Interior elements are all made from high quality materials, making the CTS a true luxury vehicle. An angular themed interior is aesthetically pleasing, providing a classy touch to the CTS’ cabin elements. All controls are ergonomically sound and the hand-stitched panels, instrument panel, and center console have an excellent feel. Comfort is plentiful thanks to a solid steering wheel, suede inserts, leather seating, active front head restraints, rain sensing wipers, outside heated mirrors, remote vehicle start, and the intuitiveness of interior settings. Drawbacks include cramped rear seating (passengers are forced to sit in direct sunlight because of the exposure of rear windows), uncomfortably stiff Recaro®, limited headroom with sunroof, and a small trunk that harbors large hinges that get in the way.

Convenient features can be found throughout the CTS. A rear vision camera and parking sensors make it easy to get in and out of compact spaces. Keyless entry, start, and remote trunk pop make accessing the vehicle a breeze. Steering wheel mounted controls, standard Bluetooth®, and side blind zone alert help keep the drivers’ focus on the road. Options consist of heated/vented seats, xenon HID headlights, 10-speaker Bose® surround sound, and a 40GB hard drive.

Overall the 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe packages luxury, style, and sportiness into a competitive mid-sized car. The CTS may not be as nimble as a BMW 335i or Audi A5 but traction control and stability control do add a bit of sportiness. RWD may be a deterrent, detracting from overall ride quality, and poor rear visibility leads to a few major blind spots but these minimal drawbacks should not inhibit potential owners from jumping head first into this attractive vehicle.

The Cadillac CTS RWD starts at an MSRP of $38,715 and goes up to $50,050 for the Premium AWD trim level.
