2012 Nissan Armada
NADAguides Test Drive Review

A full-size SUV, the 2012 Nissan Armada Platinum 4x4 shares its body-on-frame with the Titan, Xterra, Frontier, and Pathfinder. The Armada Platinum is the perfect blend of utility, entertainment and comfort, boasting a towing capacity of 9,000 lbs. Drive train options consist of standard RWD and optional all-mode 4WD. Excellent weight distribution cuts any potential sway, making for solid handling in all driving conditions. Visibility is good all around due to large windows preventing most blind spots which are major perks for a SUV of this size.

Exterior colors include white, silver, charcoal, black, brown, slate and burgundy. The Armada has rugged smooth exterior lines and minor chrome accents on the exhaust, roof rack, side step rails and wheels, give it a beefy elegance. The exterior design has a tight feel with very few visible lines and solid fitting panels giving the Armada a very appealing presence.

Under the hood drivers will find a 5.6-liter DOHC V8 engine that produces 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. For a full-size SUV, the Armada has ample power, and although it is slow at picking up speed, acceleration is adequate and the engine power is maintained well without a problem. The 5-speed automatic transmission (with tow/haul mode) totes smooth shifting, with no “jerk” or “pull” between gears.

Interior ergonomics are superb thanks to well placed dials and buttons. Dashboard space is efficiently utilized making for a clean looking cockpit. A comfortable leather-wrapped steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, and 8-way power seating provide added comfort. The Armada seats seven and adult passengers have plenty of room due to second row legroom of 41.9 inches and third row legroom of 32.2 inches. Second row captain seats make third row access a breeze and entry into the vehicle is easy with assistance from exterior step ladders. Appropriately labeled buttons make for intuitive navigation of interior controls. Interesting features are found throughout the interior: heated steering wheel, power sunroof, fold-in side mirrors for tight parking spots, four 12-volt outlets, and second row heated seats. Attention to detail is apparent with quality leather inserts, stitched door panels, and wood accent that add a perfect amount of luxury. Dual zone climate control enables rear passengers to take control of their own comfort. Trunk space is plentiful, third row power seats also fold down, with ample room for groceries, pets, or luggage.

Parking features include backup camera coverage with color-coded assistance guidelines and a rear sonar system. Other features include a full rear seat entertainment system with wireless headphones, 11-speaker Bose® audio with subwoofer, satellite radio, USB flash drive connection, steering wheel mounted controls, hands-free phone capabilities, keyless entry, keyless start, and a full-size spare tire.

A comfortable vehicle with attractive features, the 2012 Nissan Armada Platinum 4x4 offers everything you need in a sport utility vehicle. Minimal cabin noise and smooth ride quality make for a great drive. Given the size of the vehicle wider parking spaces are needed but the Armada has a respectable turning diameter for its size. Overall an attractive vehicle, you will be more than content with all facets of the Armada.

The Armada starts at an MSRP of $39,280 for the base trim model and goes up to $54,740 for the Platinum series trim level.
