Suited for commercial duties where extensive upfitting is required, the Freightliner Sprinter Cab Chassis was first available in the United States in 2004. Based on the large van's platform, flat frame rails in the rear section of the Sprinter Cab Chassis presents the flexibility to easily utilize the vehicle for various commercial functions such as a box van, passenger bus or class c motorhome. The 2004 Freightliner Sprinter Cab Chassis debuted in the United States with the choice of a 140-inch or 158-inch wheelbase with a GVWR rated up to 9,990 pounds. Propulsion for the cab/chassis version of the Freightliner van came was sourced from the same 2.7-liter five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine used in the passenger and cargo models. A redesigned Freightliner Sprinter Cab Chassis was introduced for 2007 with a new front end style and featured an all-new diesel powerplant. A 3.0-liter V-6 turbocharged diesel producing 280 pound-feet of torque utilized BlueTEC SCR technology for highly improved emissions. For 2014, a smaller 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel base powerplant was introduced to the Freightliner Sprinter lineup and would be adopted by the Cab Chassis model. For 2017, the Freightliner Sprinter Cab Chassis is available with a 144-inch or a 170-inch wheelbase length.
