Taking the place of the GMC Rally Wagon as a full-sized passenger van, the Savana Passenger van was introduced for the 1997 model year. Replacing technology dating back to 1971, the 1997 GMC Savana Passenger van featured a refined design and a revised cabin capable of seating up to 15 occupants. Available in G1500, G2500 and G3500 classifications, the 1998 GMC Savana Passenger van was offered with four Vortec gasoline engines. A 4.3-liter V-6 was provided as base power for the Savana G1500 and G2500 models with V-8 engine options available. The higher capacity G2500 and G3500 versions of the Savana Passenger van could also be equipped with a 6.5-liter turbocharged diesel V-8 powerplant producing up to 385 pound-feet of torque. From 1998 to 2002, the one-ton version of the GMC Savana Passenger van included high displacement V-8 engines. A 7.4-liter V-9 producing 290 horsepower was offered until 2001 when its was replaced by a 340-horsepower 8.1-liter V-8. Front air conditioning, 15-inch steel wheels, anti-lock braking system and dual airbags came standard on the 1998 GMC Savana Passenger. Along with a mild styling revision in 2003 that included the addition of a driver’s side rear passenger entry door, the GMC Savana Passenger van received a substantial mechanical upgrade. Along with adding the option of all-wheel drive, the 2003 GMC Savana Passenger van was given four-wheel disc braking and featured improved Vortec engine power. The diesel engine option was discontinued on the passenger versions of the Savana for 2003 and would not return to the van line-up until the 2011 model year. In 2008, FlexFuel compatibility with E85 blended gasoline was introduced on the 5.3-liter V-8 engine and was expanded to all gasoline powerplants for 2010. Also in 2010, the Savana 2500 and 3500 models received a six-speed automatic transmission.
