The first appearance of Lexus badging on a sport utility vehicle (SUV) appeared in 1995. Called the Lexus LX 450, the luxury sport utility vehicle was a retuned version of the Toyota Land Cruiser boasting only minor adjustments. As a luxury brand devoted to cars until the LX 450's debut, Lexus was one of the first premium marques to branch out their product line in such a manner. First sold with a 4.5-liter six-cylinder engine providing only moderate momentum, a 1998 introduction of an upgraded Lexus LX 470 brought forth a greatly-appreciated V-8 powerplant. Lexus was also an early adopter to the premium crossover utility philosophy in the late 1990s with the RX. The Lexus RX's stylish exterior, car-like ride and high occupant comfort made the luxury crossover an immediate hit. Serving as a mid-sized sport utility vehicle alternative to the LX, the Lexus GX accommodates up to seven passengers and operates with an ambitious four-wheel drive system capable of off-roading. Standing for "Nimble Crossover", the Lexus NX is the newest addition to the luxury utility line-up existing as a compact entry-level vehicle.
