Debuting in the United States during the 2000 model year, the Volvo S40 sedan receives a complete redesign in time for 2005. Based on the Volvo P1 platform shared with the European-based Ford Focus, the Volvo S40 wheelbase is longer but the overall length of the sharpened exterior is shorter. A wagon counterpart to the S40 is now called the V50 offered with the same choice of a 2.4i or T5 model. For the second generation, Volvo's entry-level sedan and wagon offer available all-wheel drive. In its third year of production for the American market, the XC90 packs a new potent punch for 2005. Developed for Volvo by Yamaha, a 4.4-liter V-8 engine produces 288 horsepower and comes standard equipped with all-wheel drive. New styling consisting of updated headlights, taillights and updated interior has been incorporated on the S60 sedan along with the V70 wagon. For 2005, run-flat tires are available on the S60 and S80. The Volvo C70 has been temporarily removed from the Swedish auto brand's lineup as a new generation 2006 version is planned.
